Would anyone have a problem with Gilliam's being appointed in such a capacity in light
of his wisdom & on field achievements. He'd not be a coach but participate in film review, preseason practice planning, & postseason evaluation
with no decision making authority on personnel, play calling etc., leaving those tasks to the coaching staff, & AD.
A few years ago Gilliam hit on the idea of a unique version of the Wildcat Offensive Scheme. In a book he published which he discussed with Howard Gentry, Jr.
on a Saturday morning sports talk show, he thought of a scheme in which every backfield player would be capable of throwing catching, & running the
football all the time.
I remind y'all that Gilliam was the offensive coordinator in the early 80s prior to William Thomas' Head Coaching appointment in 84.
And he built that offense which used 2 QBs every game in 84 as Kenneth Biggles started & played the 1st halves; while Gilbert Renfroe started the 2nd
halves & finished the games.
This offense finished the season #2 in the 1-AA ranks, averaging 41 points/game. Mississippi Valley finished #1 with Jerry Rice, & Willie Totten. By the
way the defense finished #1 no doubt influenced by Gilliam's defensive teachings through the years.
Yea, or Nay folks?
